Think Friday: Urgent Request

There are critical moments when we must act. This is one of those moments. Northern Ireland has always taken a different path when it comes to abortion. We have sought to affirm both lives in every pregnancy. As a result we know that 100,000 people are alive in Northern Ireland today who otherwise would not be.

All that is set to change. MPs in Westminster voted for radical change that last week. The votes were carried without a mandate (no NI MP voted in favour), the actions undermine devolution, and they involved dubious parliamentary tactics. As one speaker noted, a public toilet requires more consultation than this bill. The amendments that were passed were unclear and inconsistent but will radically change abortion law, most likely leaving us with one of the most liberal regimes in Europe.

Baroness Nuala O’Loan has a long history of pro-life campaigning. She spoke passionately on the matter in the House of Lords and called the government to account. She has launched an open letter to the Prime Minister highlighting the constitutional abuses that have taken place around Stella Creasy’s abortion amendment. She is also working with Lord Eames and Lord Hay on amendments to hold the government to account.

Sometimes people ask me if there is anything they can do to help. Today you can. Sometimes people say we are with you, let us know when you need us to speak up. This is that moment. Lots of petitions cross my desk. Lots of great causes ask us to email our MP. We try to do so sparingly. But this is a moment for action. This is the time to rise up and speak for the unborn who have no voice.

The government seems intent on driving through this abortion bill. Baroness O’Loan and others need our help to prevent this. If you believe that both lives matter, please click the link below, and add your name. If you believe that the people of Northern Ireland should decide this matter, then please add your name. If you believe in truth and justice and compassion then please add your name.

Practically, we are working with our friends at Right to Life to gather all the names in one place. When you click the link, you will be asked to add your first and last name. You will also be asked for your email and postcode (to verify you live in NI) - these will not be made public.

This is the moment to stand up and be counted. Let us not look back and wish we had done more. Please join us and stand with the smallest of divine image bearers - those who are knit together in their mother’s womb, fearfully and wonderfully made. (Ps 139:13-14)
